Facials for Dry Winter Skin in Ottawa

HydraFacial & What Are the

Ottawa winters are beautiful, but they are hard on skin. Between freezing wind chills, dry indoor heating and long, hot showers to warm up, many women notice their skin feeling tight, flaky, dull or more sensitive from November through March. The right winter facial in Ottawa, paired with a few smart changes to your routine at home, can help your skin feel comfortable and look healthy all season long.

Why Ottawa winters leave skin so dry

Your skin has a natural protective barrier made of oils and lipids that helps hold water in. Winter puts that barrier under pressure in several ways:

  • Cold, dry outdoor air. Cold air holds very little moisture, so water evaporates from your skin more quickly.
  • Wind. Waiting at a bus stop, shovelling the driveway or skating on the Rideau Canal exposes your face to biting wind that can leave skin red and chapped.
  • Indoor heating. Furnaces and baseboard heaters dry out the air inside your home and office.
  • Hot showers. They feel wonderful after a cold commute, but hot water strips natural oils from the skin.
  • Temperature swings. Moving between –20°C outdoors and a warm room can leave skin flushed and reactive.
  • Winter sun. Snow reflects UV light, so your skin still needs protection on bright days.

The result is often a combination of dryness, flaking, tightness, dullness and, for some, more breakouts as skin tries to compensate.

Signs your skin needs extra winter care

  • Tightness after cleansing
  • Flaky patches, especially around the nose and eyebrows
  • Makeup that looks patchy or settles into dry areas
  • A dull, tired-looking complexion
  • Stinging when you apply products that usually feel fine
  • Rough, cracked hands and chapped lips

The best facials for dry winter skin at Sunmoon Beauty

Every facial at our Findlay Creek studio is adjusted to your skin on the day. These are the treatments we most often recommend in the colder months.

HydraFacial ($150)

Our HydraFacial is a popular winter choice. It combines deep cleansing, gentle exfoliation, extraction and an infusion of hydrating serums, followed by soothing care and SPF. It helps lift dry, dull surface buildup while replenishing moisture, so skin looks smoother and more radiant with no downtime. A standard session takes about 45 minutes.

Signature Customized Facial ($150)

If your skin feels dry in some places and congested in others, the Signature Customized Facial is tailored to exactly what your skin needs, with deep cleansing, gentle exfoliation and nourishing hydration.

Glow Facial ($100)

Winter can drain the radiance from your complexion. The Glow Facial uses a brightening vitamin C approach with gentle exfoliation and hydration to help refresh dull, tired-looking skin.

Lymphatic Drainage Facial ($50 for 30 minutes, $75 for 45 minutes)

Long winter nights, indoor heating and salty comfort food can leave your face looking puffy. Our Lymphatic Drainage Facial uses gentle, rhythmic massage to support circulation and help reduce the look of puffiness. It’s also deeply relaxing on a grey February afternoon.

Add-ons for winter

  • Hand Treatment ($15): nourishing care for hands dried out by cold air and frequent washing.
  • Neck Treatment add-on: hydrating care for an area that’s often forgotten.
  • LED Light Therapy ($30): a gentle, no-downtime add-on to support calmer, healthier-looking skin.

A note on stronger exfoliation in winter

Treatments like dermaplaning can be lovely for removing dry, flaky buildup, but if your skin is very dry, irritated or cracked, it may be better to calm and hydrate it first. We’ll guide you during your visit.

How often should you get a facial in winter?

For most women, a facial every three to four weeks works well, roughly matching your skin’s natural renewal cycle. If your skin is especially dry, starting with a HydraFacial and following up monthly through the season can help keep it on track. Read more in our guide on how often to get a HydraFacial.

At-home winter skincare tips

A professional facial works best alongside a gentle routine at home:

  • Switch to a gentle, non-foaming cleanser that doesn’t leave skin feeling tight.
  • Use lukewarm water, not hot, and keep showers short.
  • Moisturize on damp skin to help lock in water. In winter, a richer cream with ingredients like ceramides, glycerin or shea butter can help.
  • Layer hydration. A hydrating serum under your moisturizer adds an extra boost.
  • Run a humidifier in your bedroom to add moisture to dry indoor air.
  • Wear SPF every day, even when it’s cloudy or snowy.
  • Protect your face outdoors with a scarf, and wash scarves and toques regularly to avoid irritation.
  • Don’t forget lips and hands. Use a lip balm and hand cream often.
  • Go easy on exfoliating acids and scrubs if your skin feels raw or tight.

If you have persistent dryness, cracking, itching or redness that doesn’t improve, it’s worth seeing a doctor or dermatologist, as some skin conditions need medical care.

Winter facial Ottawa FAQs

What is the best facial for dry winter skin?

Many women choose the HydraFacial in winter because it cleanses, exfoliates and hydrates in one session. A Signature Customized Facial is a great option if your skin has several concerns at once.

Can I get a facial if my skin is flaky?

Yes. A facial can gently lift dry buildup and restore hydration. We’ll adjust the treatment so it isn’t too strong for skin that feels irritated.

Do I still need sunscreen in winter?

Yes. UV rays are present year-round, and snow reflects sunlight, so daily SPF is still important.

Will a winter facial help my makeup look better?

Smoother, more hydrated skin usually makes makeup apply more evenly, which is why many clients book a facial before holiday parties and events.
