Is Laser Hair Removal Permanent? How Long Results Really Last

Full Legs Laser

It’s one of the first questions women ask when they’re tired of shaving and waxing: is laser hair removal permanent? The honest answer is that laser offers long-term hair reduction, not a guarantee that every hair will be gone forever. Many people see a significant, lasting reduction in hair after a full series of sessions, but results vary, and some maintenance is normal. Here’s what that means in practice and how to set realistic expectations.

Permanent hair removal vs long-term hair reduction

These two phrases sound similar, but they mean different things:

  • Permanent hair removal would mean the treated follicles never produce hair again.
  • Long-term hair reduction means a lasting decrease in the number of hairs that grow back after treatment. The hair that does return is often finer, lighter and slower-growing.

Laser hair removal falls into the second category. Some follicles are damaged enough that they stop producing hair. Others are weakened and produce finer hair. A few may recover, or new follicles may become active over time.

How laser hair removal works

Laser light is absorbed by the pigment (melanin) in the hair. That energy turns into heat, which travels down the hair shaft to the follicle and damages its ability to grow new hair. Because it relies on pigment, laser tends to work best on dark, coarse hair. Very light blond, red, grey and white hair has little pigment to target and usually responds poorly.

Why you need multiple sessions

Hair doesn’t all grow at once. Each follicle moves through a cycle:

  • Anagen (growth phase): the hair is actively growing and attached to the follicle. This is when laser is most effective.
  • Catagen (transition phase): the hair detaches from its blood supply.
  • Telogen (resting phase): the old hair sheds and the follicle rests before starting again.

At any one time, only a portion of your hairs are in the growth phase. That’s why sessions are spaced several weeks apart: each appointment catches a new group of actively growing hairs. Many people need around six to eight sessions for a noticeable, lasting result, but your number depends on the area, your hair and your hormones. For a deeper look, read our guide on how many laser sessions you may need.

How long do laser hair removal results last?

After completing a full series, many people enjoy smoother skin for a long time, often with only occasional maintenance. There isn’t a single timeline that applies to everyone. Some notice very little regrowth for years, while others see a few hairs return within months and book a touch-up once or twice a year.

What affects how long results last?

Hair colour and thickness

Dark, coarse hair usually responds best. Fine or light hair may need more sessions and may not respond as fully.

Skin tone and laser type

The laser type and settings need to suit your skin. Learn more in our guide to laser hair removal in Ottawa and during your consultation.

Hormones

Hormones have a strong influence on hair growth. Pregnancy, menopause, certain medications and conditions such as polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) can stimulate new growth, especially on the face, chin and neck. If you notice sudden or unusual hair growth, it’s a good idea to talk with your doctor, as laser does not treat the underlying cause.

Treatment area

Areas like the underarms and bikini line often respond well. Hormonally influenced areas, such as the chin, may need more sessions and more maintenance.

Consistency

Skipping sessions or waxing between them can slow progress. Shaving between appointments and sticking to your schedule helps.

What maintenance looks like

Once you’ve completed your main series, maintenance is usually much lighter than ongoing waxing or shaving. Some clients come back for a single session on an area when they notice a few hairs returning. At Sunmoon Beauty, laser clients can book one free touch-up per treatment area after a paid laser treatment. It’s designed for small leftover patches of hair, not a full session, and can’t be booked on its own.

Is laser hair removal worth it?

For many women, yes, especially if you’re tired of the time, cost and irritation of shaving or waxing, or you struggle with ingrown hairs. It helps to look at the long-term picture. Waxing your legs every few weeks adds up over the years, while a laser series is a defined plan with lighter maintenance afterwards.

Some current examples from our price list:

  • Upper lip: $20 per session
  • Underarms: $40 per session
  • Full legs: $150 per session
  • Full body: $350 per session
  • Full body, 3-session package: $750; 6 sessions: $1,400; 9 sessions: $1,950

Prices can vary depending on your skin and hair, and your final plan is confirmed at your consultation. Our article on laser hair removal cost in Ottawa breaks this down further.

Start in the fall, enjoy it by summer

Because you’ll need to avoid tanning during treatment, fall and winter are ideal times to begin. In Ottawa, months of long sleeves and covered legs make sun avoidance easy, and by the time the snow melts in Findlay Creek, Riverside South or Greely, you could be well into your plan.

Frequently asked questions

Is laser hair removal permanent?

Laser provides long-term hair reduction. Many people see a lasting decrease in hair after a full series, but some regrowth is possible and occasional maintenance is common. Results vary.

Why is my hair growing back after laser?

In the first few weeks, this is often treated hair shedding. Later, it may be hairs that were in a resting phase during your session, or new growth influenced by hormones. Continuing your series usually addresses this.

Does laser work on grey or blond hair?

Usually not well, because laser needs pigment in the hair to target. If most of your hair is light or grey, electrolysis may be worth discussing with a qualified electrologist.

How far apart are laser sessions?

Sessions are typically spaced several weeks apart, depending on the area. Your esthetician will recommend a schedule that suits your hair growth.
